Air rifles have become a popular choice for LSR shooters. with many top competitors using them, They have evolved to become highly specialized instruments designed for competitive target shooting. These air guns are used in various competitions such as the Olympic Games, World Championships, and the NSRA national competitions. There are many organizations that promote target shooting with air rifles as a competitive sport. These organizations have established standards for air guns, ammunition, and shooting ranges.


Target shooting with air gun rifles is an excellent way to develop and hone shooting skills. It is a great way to introduce children and teenagers to the sport of shooting. However, it is essential to ensure that all safety precautions are taken to prevent accidents. It is vital to note that air rifles are not toys. Precautions to prevent unauthorized access to air guns by children under 18:


- Air guns must be stored in a safe, secure location where children cannot access them.

- Air guns must be stored unloaded and with the safety engaged.

- Air guns must be stored separately from ammunition.

- Adults should supervise the use of air guns by children under 18 at all times.

- All should receive training on the safe handling and use of air rifles before being allowed to use them.


Air rifles  can be divided into two main categories based on their power source: spring piston and pre-charged pneumatic (PCP). Spring piston air guns are powered by a spring that compresses air, which then propels the pellet out of the gun. PCP air guns use compressed air that is stored in a tank or cylinder.


In the UK, air rifles  are classified as firearms, and the law governs their possession and use. Air rifles  with a muzzle energy of less than 12 ft-lbs are not subject to firearms laws, and anyone over 18 may buy and possess them. However, air guns with a muzzle energy of more than 12 ft-lbs are considered Section 1 firearms and must be held on a Firearms Certificate (FAC). 


Target shooting with air guns requires a high level of skill and accuracy. The shooter must have excellent hand-eye coordination, control, and focus.
