Becoming a Range Officer

Range Officers

The National Smallbore Rifle Association (NSRA) is a UK-based organization that promotes the sport of shooting. As part of its commitment to safety, the NSRA requires that all shooting take place under the control of a Range Officer. To achieve this goal, the NSRA offers training programs for Range Conducting Officers (RCOs).

Becoming an RCO is an important step for anyone who wants to ensure the safety of participants in shooting sports. The RCO is responsible for the safe and efficient management of shooting ranges, and their primary duty is to ensure that all participants are following the rules and regulations governing shooting activities.

One of the key reasons why becoming an RCO is so important is that shooting sports can be dangerous if not properly managed, but extremely safe if managed properly.  The use of firearms carries inherent risks, and there are strict safety procedures that must be followed in order to minimize those risks. By becoming an RCO, individuals can help ensure that these procedures are followed, and that everyone on the range is safe.

The role of an RCO goes beyond just enforcing safety procedures. They are also responsible for ensuring that shooting activities are conducted in a manner that is fair and equitable. This means that all participants must have access to the same opportunities and resources, and that no one is given an unfair advantage.

Furthermore, RCOs must be knowledgeable about the sport of shooting and the rules and regulations governing it. This knowledge is essential for ensuring that all participants are following the rules and that competitions are conducted fairly. RCOs must also be able to recognize potential safety hazards and take appropriate action to address them.

Another important aspect of being an RCO is the ability to communicate effectively with participants. This includes giving clear instructions, providing feedback, and handling conflicts in a calm and professional manner. Effective communication is essential for maintaining a safe and enjoyable shooting environment for all participants.

Qualifying as an RCO is an important step for anyone who wants to ensure the safety and fairness of shooting activities. By undergoing training and gaining the necessary knowledge and skills, individuals can help ensure that all participants are following the rules and that shooting activities are conducted in a safe and equitable manner. The NSRA's philosophy on safety is one that should be embraced by all shooting enthusiasts, and becoming an RCO is a crucial part of that philosophy.

In the case of all ranges rented by civilian clubs from military sources, it is a condition of hire that the range must be controlled by a Range Officer who holds an RCO qualification issued by the NSRA or NRA. Non-military range owners may apply similar conditions to the use of their facilities.
